Interview with Park – Ahead of His Show at Woodlawn Theatre
OK so this is different than your other band, Juco right? How would you describe your sound?
“This new batch of songs is a blend of Bon Iver meets The War on Drugs but a bit more mellow with a sprinkle of folk.”
Safe to say: it’s the perfect soundtrack for a night drive, a porch sit, or a reflective moment with your feelings.
Musical influences?
Bon Iver, The War on Drugs, Dijon, Mk.Gee, Jude Moses, Djo, The Japanese House—if you're sensing a theme, it's atmospheric, emotional, and sonically rich. Park fits right in.
So… how did the band start?
“I met myself in 1993 when I was born on an early Christmas morning. T’was magical.”
Enough said. Hard to go back farther than that…
Favorite city to play (besides your hometown)?
“Nothing beats a hometown show! Outside of that, I’d have to say Nashville. The indie scene there is strong.”
Craziest tour moment?
Picture this: You roll up to a venue in Orlando, and the front half is flooded. Instead of panicking, Park and crew grab push brooms and start sweeping water out the front door. Soundcheck? Who needs it.
Toughest experience on the road?
“Yea man y’all can crash with us after the show. We’re not too far from here...”
They lived two hours away and it was already 1:00am. Brutal.
The song you’re over playing?
“Rearview.”
Fair enough. Every artist has one.
The songs you can’t wait to play live?
“‘Sarah’, ‘Dark’, or ‘Shallow Breath’. Always the new stuff.”
(Translation: get ready for some fresh never before heard tracks at this show.)
Last podcast you listened to?
Josh Pate’s College Football Show aka Late Kick.
(We see you, SEC fans.)
Favorite Birmingham memory?
“The last time I played full band in BHAM we ran the entire PA and all our gear off one outlet. We tripped the power about four times during our set.”
We know Park brings a big amp, but hopefully our circuits can handle the power!
What can fans expect at the Woodlawn show?
“An immersive experience and everything I’ve got.”
If you’ve seen Park play before (as Juco or solo) you know this is true. So much thought goes into each and every performance. It’s not just ‘another show’ for him. It’s THE show. Every time.
Dream tourmate?
The 1975, War on Drugs, Bon Iver. (Somehow not surprised.)
New artists you’re into?
BEAN. “These dudes are so killer.”
You heard it here first.
When’s the next record coming out?
“1/1/3127.”
Okay so… we’ll wait?
Anything you wish someone would ask you?
Q: Denny’s vs. Shoney’s?
A: Jones BBQ & Foot Massage.
(We weren’t ready either.)
Any final words for your fans?
“I have fans?”
You do now, Park. And Birmingham can’t wait to see you.
